A combined desalination and solar-pumped irrigation system supporting smallholder agriculture in one of the most water-scarce river valleys in the world.

The Challenge

Jordan is among the most water-stressed countries globally, and the Valley's agricultural output has historically depended on brackish groundwater that shortens both crop yields and pump lifespans.

Our Approach

We financed a small-scale desalination unit paired with solar-powered distribution to twelve farming cooperatives, working with a Jordanian water-technology firm we first backed in an earlier, smaller pilot in 2020.

Impact

Salinity in treated irrigation water dropped by over 70 percent, extending both crop viability and equipment lifespan. Cooperative yields for water-sensitive crops rose by an average of 22 percent across the first two growing seasons.

Future Outlook

A second unit is under construction with joint financing from a regional development bank, and we expect to hold this position for the operational life of the first, likely two decades or more.
